MENTORING OPPORTUNITIES

As part of Mission Houston's Whole and Healthy Children initiative, several members of the Mission Cy-Fair Compassion Team recently began mentoring at-risk students at Bane Elementary.  Mark Day, Deana Day and Terrie Jurney are now meeting weekly with their students, and all report that it has been a fantastic experience.  Randy and Staci Schroeder have completed the mentor training with a view toward mentoring a student in the Fall of 2008.  A number of members at Cypress Bible Church have signed up to mentor students at Lamkin Elementary, also in the Fall of 2008.

The role of the mentor is to encourage and motivate the student and to provide guidance and insight that the student may not be receiving elsewhere.  Deana Day spent the first few meetings getting to know her 4th grade student, and now they are beginning a study of character traits.

Becoming a mentor is easy - sign up for the two hour Cy-Fair training and complete a background check form.  Mission Houston will also provide additional training -- two hours initially, and then two updates during the school year.  The ongoing mentoring time commitment is only a half hour on a weekly basis, and it is well worth the time.  The next Cy-Fair mentor Training is currently scheduled for September 15, 2008 at the Berry center.  For more information on the Cy-Fair Mentor program, contact Mark Day at
mark@missioncyfair.org or Deana Day at deana.day@sbcglobal.net, or refer to the CFISD website at http://www.cfisd.net/dept2/pie/mentorg.htm.
